Dark Earth, Eastern Angles latest show (its 101st in fact) is just a few days away! Last Wednesday the team went on site at Flag Fen to start creating the fen within the fen. The first day was about getting the tented temporary theatre up, see here, whilst yesterday and today were about starting to turn it into an atmospheric auditorium.
Our tent village has caused much interest at #flagfen, many people thinking it a major excavation. Well in a way it is an excavation … but of a dramatic type!
This was where we had got to on Wednesday, a protective floor had gone down and was starting to be covered in board which would ultimately become our stage.
By Friday things had move on considerably. Here is designer Nicky Bunch`s model of the set looking out into the auditorium.
And here is the view from the pulpit, as it were:-
Needless to say this being a play called Dark Earth, there is quite a bit of that:
and other bits of foilage…
not everything of course is natural, and we’re going through paint at a rapid rate of knots.
Meanwhile costumes await the 34 strong community cast…
as do one or two unusual props…
Four more days of hard work and we will be ready for our first audience on Thursday night*
Dark Earth opens on Thursday 12 September and runs until Sunday 22 September. More details and booking information can be found here. The show is directed by Naomi Jones and designed by Nicky Bunch and is performed by a 34 strong community cast.
